Abstract Urban spatial structure is one of the core research fields in urban geography science and urban planning science. As a very complicated phenomenon, the growth of urban spatial structure has caused great interest by scholars from different fields. But there still isn't a perfect and complete answer to it. Based on the systematic survey of the relevant research methods and achievements in the West,from three aspects,i. e. structural growth,spatial organization and growth process,and through some principles,this article comprehensively and deeply explains the structural growth of urban space;study the relevant influence of new economic circumstance and technical factors. It points out the fundamental principle:evolution of urban spatial structure is the spatial process in social economic development. This article will enrich the research of urban spatial structure and make it more completely.
